Parliament Hill

Canada’s most recognizable landmark. Neo-Gothic buildings constructed between 1859 and 1876, perched above the Ottawa River with a direct view of Gatineau on the other side. The grounds are freely accessible at all times — and guided tours of the buildings are also free.

What you can visit

The West Block

House of Commons – Free guided tours of the chamber where Canada’s elected representatives sit. Allow 45 minutes before your visit time to clear security. Online reservation recommended at visit.parl.ca.

The Senate of Canada Building

Ottawa’s former train station, converted into the upper chamber of Parliament. Beaux-Arts architecture, free guided tour of about 30 minutes. Arrive 25 minutes early.

The East Block

From late June to early September, tours of the heritage rooms let visitors discover parliamentary life in the 19th century.

The Changing of the Guard

From late June to early September, every morning at 10 am on the Hill grounds. A Canadian military tradition dating back to 1959. Free, no reservation required.

Important note: The Centre Block — with the Peace Tower — is under renovation until 2030. An immersive 360° experience is available to discover it virtually on-site.

  • Distance from Hotel V: about 15 minutes by car or transit
  • Parking: no parking on Parliament Hill — paid municipal parking lots nearby. Tip: leave your car at Hotel V (free) and take the STO bus with a connection to OC Transpo
  • Guided tours: free, online reservation at visit.parl.ca — spots fill up fast in high season
  • Security check: mandatory to enter the buildings, similar to an airport. Bring a small bag — large luggage is not permitted and there is no storage on-site

ByWard Market

Just minutes on foot from Parliament Hill, ByWard Market is Ottawa’s vibrant heart. Restaurants from every cuisine, shops, bars and lively terraces. A must-stop for a bite to eat or to end the day.

Rideau Canal

A UNESCO World Heritage Site. In summer, stroll along it or cycle its length. In winter, it transforms into a natural skating rink — one of the world’s largest, stretching nearly 8 km. An iconic capital experience.

National museums

Ottawa concentrates several national museums within minutes of each other: National Gallery of Canada, Canadian War Museum, Canadian Museum of Nature. One day isn’t enough to see everything — plan based on your interests.
